English levels are referred to in many different ways and this can be confusing. The diagram below is a useful tool to see how an English proficiency on one framework corresponds to the same level on a different framework.

CEFR comparison chart

CEFR or the Common European Framework of Reference uses 6 levels to describe English language proficiency: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 and three terms: Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User.

These are ESOL examinations offered by the University of Cambridge. The 5 examinations offered in the Main Suite are: Key English Test (KET), Preliminary English Test (PET), First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

IELTS or International English Language Testing System is an examination with no pass or fail grades, instead, language proficiency is graded 9 band system.
